The party of Guatemala’s president-elect Bernardo Arévalo has appealed to the country’s top electoral authority to lift a suspension by a lower election agency. The party says it was an illegal move aimed at thwarting the anti-corruption campaigner. The petition by Arévalo’s Seed Movement comes after a night of political chaos. Hours before the country’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal certified late Monday that Arévalo won this month’s presidential election, another government body _ the electoral registry _ suspended his party from all political activities. Arévalo appears certain to take office as president on Jan. 14, but the suspension throws into doubt whether his Seed Movement lawmakers can take their seats in Congress.

Plans to build the world’s tallest flagpole are being delayed — again. The tiny town of Columbia Falls in Maine is delaying large developments for another six months to allow more time to complete needed rules and regulations for large developments. The plan is for a flagpole stretching 1,461 feet skyward, higher than the Empire State Building, veterans' museums, and other attractions. Town residents voted in March to adopt a six-month moratorium on large projects. A town board voted Monday evening to extend the moratorium. There was no immediate comment from the family promoting the flagpole project.

Well, that's it for "The Idol," the most hate-watched show of the summer.
The year is 2023, but it might as well be 1997. One of the great viral hits of the moment is DJ Crazy Times and Ms. Biljana Electronica’s “Planet of the Bass,” a parody song pulled straight from the absurdity of Eurodance music. Think Aqua's “Barbie Girl.” At the time of writing, it has surpassed over 250 million combined views across all social platforms. But how? DJ Crazy Times is actually comedian Kyle Gordon. He says that “Eurodance generally might be in the zeitgeist” thanks to “Barbie.” Musicologist Nate Sloan believes it's a confluence of reasons, from nostalgia to the music itself.

An international investigation is underway following the arrest in Canada earlier this year of Kenneth Law, who was initially charged with two counts of counseling and aiding suicide. Canadian police say Law, from the Toronto area, used a series of websites to market and sell sodium nitrite, a substance commonly used to cure meats that can be deadly if ingested. British police recently said they are investigating the deaths of 88 people in the U.K. linked to the websites.
Syrian opposition activists and pro-government media say Arab tribesmen have clashed with U.S.-backed Kurdish fighters in several areas of eastern Syria, leaving at least 10 people dead and others wounded. Tuesday's clashes are among the worst in the region along the border with Iraq where hundreds of U.S. troops have been based since 2015 to help in the fight against the Islamic State group. The clashes first broke out Monday, a day after the U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces detained the commander of a formerly allied group and several other members of his faction after they were invited to a meeting in the northeastern city of Hassakeh.
Chemical and consumer product manufacturer 3M has agreed to pay $6 billion to settle numerous lawsuits from U.S. service members who say they experienced hearing loss or other serious injuries from using earplugs made by the company. Over recent years, hundreds of thousands of veterans and current service members have reportedly sued 3M and Aearo Technologies, a company that 3M acquired in 2008, over their Combat Arms Earplug products. The service members alleged that a defective design allowed the products to loosen slightly and cause hearing damage, according to one of the law firms representing plaintiffs. In Tuesday’s announcement, 3M maintained that the agreement was not an admission of liability — and said the products are safe when used properly.

American consumers are feeling less confident as summer comes to a close as high prices and interest rates weigh on their willingness to spend. The Conference Board, a business research group, said its consumer confidence index tumbled to 106.1 in August from a revised 114 in July. The index measures both Americans’ assessment of current economic conditions and their outlook for the next six months. Both measures saw significant declines in August. Consumers’ view of current conditions fell to 144.8 from 153, and the index for future expectations slid to 80.2 from 88 in July. A reading below 80 historically signals a recession within a year.
